Data centre relocation: selling decommissioned servers and equipment

A data centre move or shutdown leaves equipment that will not move: older servers, racks, switches, UPS units, batteries and cooling. Some of it has resale value to refurbishers and resellers. The two things that matter most are protecting your data and keeping an accurate asset record.

Short answer

Take an asset register of every device with its serial number, remove or securely erase all data before anything leaves, sort the equipment into resellable and end-of-life, sell resellable items as lots to refurbishers and resellers, and send the rest to an authorised e-waste recycler with a receipt.

Protect your data first

  • Back up and verify what you still need
  • Erase storage using a recognised sanitisation method, or physically destroy drives that cannot be erased
  • Reset network equipment and remove stored configurations and credentials
  • Keep a record of what was erased and how, for each serial number

What usually has resale value

  • Servers and storage that are still supported or in demand
  • Racks and cabinets
  • Switches, routers and firewalls
  • UPS units and power distribution
  • Precision cooling units, if working

What is end of life

  • Very old servers and drives
  • Failed UPS batteries, which are hazardous and must go to an authorised handler
  • Cables, which can be sold as metal by weight
  • Anything that does not work and cannot be repaired

Pricing

Resale value depends on make, model, age, support status and demand, and falls quickly as hardware ages. Offer the lot while the equipment is still current, and sell complete racks and matched sets together.

A note on the rules

Rules change and differ by state. Check the current rule and the buyer's valid authorisation or registration yourself before you hand anything over. This page is general information, not legal advice.

How ClearLot helps

If you are decommissioning IT equipment, you can list working servers, racks and networking as a lot on ClearLot so refurbishers and resellers can find it. ClearLot is a free-to-list stock board in India. Our team checks every lot before it goes on the board, and your name, business name and phone number are not shown to visitors. When a buyer is interested, we speak to them first and then connect you. ClearLot does not buy, hold, move, store or recycle anything, and it is not a party to the deal: price, payment and dispatch are agreed between you and the buyer.

What ClearLot does not do

ClearLot does not move or decommission data centres, erase data or recycle equipment. It helps you find buyers for the equipment you are not keeping.

Frequently asked questions

What happens to servers when a data centre closes or moves?

Equipment that still has value is sold to refurbishers and resellers after data is securely erased. Equipment at end of life goes to an authorised e-waste recycler with a receipt.

How do we make sure no data leaks when we sell old servers?

Back up what you need, then erase storage with a recognised sanitisation method or physically destroy the drives, reset network devices, and keep a record by serial number.

Who buys used servers and networking equipment?

IT refurbishers, resellers, small and mid-size businesses, and parts dealers buy used servers, racks and networking, depending on age and demand.

Does ClearLot do data centre relocation?

No. ClearLot is a stock board that helps sell the equipment you are not keeping. It does not move equipment, erase data or recycle.
