Office relocation: what to do with surplus furniture and equipment
An office move is the best time to stop paying to carry things you no longer need. Every workstation, chair or cabinet you do not move saves packing, transport and fitting cost, and can bring in money.

Short answer
Decide early what the new office needs, list the rest, and sell the surplus before moving day. Compare the cost of moving an item with what it would cost to replace or what a buyer will pay. Anything old, damaged or surplus to the new layout is a candidate to sell.
A simple way to decide
- Take: items that fit the new layout and are in good condition
- Sell: working furniture and equipment you will not use, especially matching sets
- Recycle: broken electronics, through an authorised e-waste recycler
- Scrap: damaged metal frames and cable, by weight
Timeline
- Six to eight weeks before: walk the floor and list surplus items with counts
- Four weeks before: photograph and offer the lots to buyers
- Two weeks before: agree removal dates and gate passes
- Moving week: hand over the sold items and count them out
Avoid these problems
- Waiting until moving week, when buyers will offer the least
- Selling items you still need for the new office
- Letting a buyer remove items without a count and a written record
- Handing computers away without wiping the data
How ClearLot helps
If you are moving offices, list the surplus furniture and equipment on ClearLot before the move so buyers can plan the removal. ClearLot is a free-to-list stock board in India. Our team checks every lot before it goes on the board, and your name, business name and phone number are not shown to visitors. When a buyer is interested, we speak to them first and then connect you. ClearLot does not buy, hold, move, store or recycle anything, and it is not a party to the deal: price, payment and dispatch are agreed between you and the buyer.
What ClearLot does not do
ClearLot is not a packers-and-movers service. It does not pack, move or install anything. It helps you sell what you will not be taking with you.
Frequently asked questions
What should we do with old furniture when moving offices?
Decide what the new office needs, then sell the surplus working furniture to dealers and new businesses, recycle broken electronics through an authorised recycler, and sell metal scrap by weight.
When should we start selling surplus before an office move?
Four to eight weeks ahead gives buyers time to plan removal. Waiting until moving week lowers the price you will be offered.
Is it cheaper to sell old furniture than to move it?
Often yes, for old or surplus items. Compare the cost of packing, moving and fitting an item with what it is worth or what a replacement would cost.
Does ClearLot provide office relocation?
No. ClearLot is a stock board for selling surplus. It does not provide packers, movers or installation.
