Hazardous waste recyclers in India: what a seller must check
Used oil, spent solvents, chemical sludge, expired chemicals, lead-acid batteries and similar materials can be hazardous waste. Some of it has real value to authorised recyclers who recover oil, metals or solvents. It must only go to a party that is authorised to take it.
By Sumit Rawat, founder of ClearLot. Updated 1 November 2026.
Short answer
Identify the waste and its quantity, make sure the buyer holds a valid authorisation from the State Pollution Control Board for that type of waste, use properly packed and labelled containers, and keep the transport and handover records the rules require. Never hand hazardous waste to an unauthorised dealer.
Examples that may be hazardous waste
- Used and waste oil, oily sludge and oily rags
- Spent solvents and chemical residues
- Expired or off-specification chemicals and paint
- Lead-acid and other batteries
- Process sludge and filter material from some industries
What recyclers recover
Authorised recyclers recover oil, lead, solvents, metals and other materials from waste. Because they recover value, some will pay for a clean, well-identified lot and others will only take it away. A lot with a known composition is worth more than an unknown mix.
What to check
- The buyer's authorisation, its validity date, and that it lists your type of waste
- Your own authorisation as a waste generator, if your unit needs one
- Containers that are sound, closed and labelled
- A transport arrangement and records that match the quantity and type
- A written record of what was handed over and when
What not to do
- Do not mix different wastes, which lowers value and raises risk
- Do not sell to someone who offers cash and asks for no paperwork
- Do not store waste for long periods in open or damaged containers
A note on the rules
Rules change and differ by state. Check the current rule and the buyer's valid authorisation or registration yourself before you hand anything over. This page is general information, not legal advice.
How ClearLot helps
If you hold recoverable material such as used oil, spent batteries or surplus chemicals, you can list it as a lot so authorised recyclers can find it. ClearLot is a free-to-list stock board in India. Our team checks every lot before it goes on the board, and your name, business name and phone number are not shown to visitors. When a buyer is interested, we speak to them first and then connect you. ClearLot does not buy, hold, move, store or recycle anything, and it is not a party to the deal: price, payment and dispatch are agreed between you and the buyer.
Frequently asked questions
Who can buy hazardous waste in India?
Only parties with a valid authorisation from the State Pollution Control Board for that type of waste. Ask to see it and check its validity and scope before any handover.
Can I sell used oil or waste batteries?
Often yes, to an authorised recycler. Used oil and lead-acid batteries have recovery value. Keep records and do not sell to unauthorised dealers.
Why does an unknown mixed waste sell for less?
Recyclers price by what they can recover and what it costs them to handle safely. A known, unmixed lot is easier and cheaper to process.
Does ClearLot handle hazardous waste?
No. ClearLot is a stock board that introduces sellers and buyers. It does not collect, store, transport or process waste, and it does not check a recycler's authorisation for you.
